Roel Obemio: Knowing the Man

Mid-May i got the above invitation from Galerie Francesca. Wonderful! I have a Roel Obemio painting which I purchased last year from an individual and it wasn't accompanied by a certificate. It was my chance to have it authenticated and certified by no less the artist himself.

I was glad to have attended. I got to know the man behind the paintings that plaster a smile on my face. Obemios are colourful and whimsical. They brighten up every wall you hang them on. The influence of the Colombian painter Fernando Botero is there. Boterism, voluminous figures stare at you. Nonetheless, the faces of the characters are distinctly Obemio's.

It was great that Galerie Francesca held this night for supporters of Roel Obemio to know the man. It makes your collection of Obemios or even just one painting of his, more meaningful. You get to understand why most of his paintings has a moon in it and why his characters can only afford half a smile.

Thanks to Galerie Francesca for the opportunity to meet the man. Thank you too for the certificates you promised! :)

  1. Good for you! Got an invitation too but wasn't able to attend. Two of the pieces above are mine - "Tampuhan" and 'Sonata". I could have asked Roel Obemio to authograph them. Sayang

    1. Hi! i love the "Tampuhan" you got. ;) ... Don't worry cause i think sometime December, he will be having a part 2 of his Homage exhibit. The man is so nice i'm pretty sure he'd be more than willing to autograph the paintings you purchased.

    1. Basically the moon represents his dreams. Roel told us of his struggles while growing up. He came from a big but poor family from Mindanao. Fine arts had no place in their house cause most of his relatives thought it went as far as painting jeepneys. There wasn't encouragement to pursue his talent until he left home and ventured on his own. Remembering his dreams, he kept going back to his art until people started to recognize his talent. While the moon is about his dreams, fishes in his paintings are about the blessings he now enjoys.
